題目： The One-Child Policy and Intergenerational Mobility
摘要：
This paper theoretically and empirically examines how fertility decline induced by the one-child policy has affected intergenerational mobility in China. I present a human capital investment model incorporating fertility and credit constraints, and show that fertility decline narrows the educational attainment gap between children from credit-constrained families and non-credit-constrained families, thus increasing intergenerational mobility. I then empirically test the model’s prediction using variation in the implementation intensity of the one-child policy across regions and cohorts addressing the endogeneity of the fertility decision. I confirm that lower fertility increases intergenerational mobility, and that the one-child policy played an under-appreciated role in changing intergenerational mobility in China.
